Fostering Community Wellness Through Local Partnerships

Haringey Reach and Connect is dedicated to supporting local community members, but a significant, often unseen part of our work involves fostering connections between professionals and organisations within the borough. By building an extensive network of local groups and services, we ensure that those seeking assistance can find the right support and opportunities within their community.
One such success story began last summer when Eileen Cullen, a chair yoga and gentle yoga instructor, reached out to us in search of venues to hold her sessions. The team offered suggestions based on their network, hoping to facilitate a beneficial connection.
Months later, during a conversation with residents at Bigbury Close, one of Haringey’s supported housing hubs, the topic of exercise sessions arose. Residents fondly recalled previous classes that had taken place in the hall, expressing a desire for their return.
Recognising an opportunity, Nick, a team member from Haringey Reach and Connect, spoke with the hub manager about the yoga instructor’s inquiry from the summer. With mutual interest confirmed, an introduction was made between the instructor and the hub manager.
As a result, taster sessions were organised before Christmas 2024, and regular weekly classes commenced in January. The sessions have since flourished, fostering not only physical well-being but also a sense of camaraderie among attendees.
Nick had the pleasure of attending one of the taster sessions and, aside from feeling more energised and less stiff, was delighted by the warm and friendly atmosphere. He could see that the instructor already seemed to have built strong connections with the group, and the conversation and laughter made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Now running weekly, the gentle yoga sessions offer residents an opportunity to engage in light exercise within a welcoming environment. This story highlights the value of collaboration and the positive impact that community-driven initiatives can have in improving quality of life for local residents.
Haringey Reach and Connect continues to facilitate such connections, ensuring that services and opportunities are accessible to all who need them.
The Chair yoga sessions are open to new attendees. Contact Eileen Cullen on exercisewitheileen@gmail.com to get more information or to ask about attending.
The sessions take place every Wednesday from 11:30am to 12:30pm, at Harmony Hall, Bigbury Close, London, N17 8JQ.
