Local Hero Bob Brown Receives Loneliness Awareness Award
Bob Brown, a Haringey resident renowned for his fundraising efforts and community spirit, received the Loneliness Awareness Award 2024. The award was presented by the Mayor of Haringey on Friday 7 June at The Pavilion Café in Bruce Castle Park.
In his youth, Bob achieved international fame as the World Karate Tile Breaking Champion, an accomplishment recorded in The Guinness Book of Records. Since retiring, he has channeled his unique skills into raising substantial funds for both local and national charities.
Fourteen years ago, Bob moved into supported housing, where he found a sense of belonging and community. Motivated by the desire to give back, Bob reconnected with his community, initially with support from Mind in Haringey, by hosting bingo events. These events, now held twice a week, are well attended and bring joy to many.
Bob’s dedication to fostering social connections was recognised last year when he became a ‘Hub Host’, a role that acknowledges his efforts in uniting people. Bob received training from Haringey Reach and Connect to become a ‘Hub Host’.
Bob said: “Doing what I love, which is entertaining people and being part of the community, is an amazing feeling”.
Judith McDonagh, the Housing Manager where Bob lives said: “Residents have especially requested Bob to host the bingo sessions because he has a real talent for talking to people and making them feel comfortable and enjoy the event”.
Bob's upcoming award highlights the impact of his work. He is one of many older individuals who volunteer their time to help those who might otherwise feel isolated. Through his efforts, Bob has become a cherished figure in Tottenham, demonstrating the powerful role that social engagement plays in improving quality of life.
Loneliness Awareness Week will run from 10 to 16 June with events and activities across Haringey. You can see the activites here.
